August 27, 2015How do you define strength?
Sometimes, the most powerful expression of strength has little to do with weight lifted or reps completed — and everything to do with the way you lift others up. In the way you share your strength to cultivate someone else’s growth and development; in the way you help build others up; in the way you “let [your] own light shine, and unconsciously give others permission to do the same.”
.
This summer, CrossFit DC was proud to host two specialty seminars, both conceived and led by our in-house rock-star/role-model Coach Kate, aimed at bringing women together through strength training.
.
Earlier in the summer, participants from across the CrossFit DC community had the opportunity to work closely with Kate in a small-group setting, tackling a mini-strength cycle and progressions on key skills targeted by class members. “Underlying all this smart and structured exercise,” as one seminar participant put it, “was the opportunity to get to work regularly with some of the many awesome female athletes at CFDC, under the tutelage of *the* fittest woman in DC!”
.

.
In the past few weeks, we were thrilled to open up this opportunity to women from beyond our gym walls, as well.
.
The idea, as Kate explained, wasn’t just to provide workouts over the course of the seminar’s four days — but also to provide participants with the knowledge, experience, and confidence to begin integrating strength training into their personal fitness routines.
.

From back squatting to benching, pressing to pull-ups (with a healthy sprinkling of burpees, bear crawling, and push-ups along the way), class members met “at the bar” for two consecutive weekends to explore the physical and mental challenges of strength training through workouts and group discussions.
.
“Overall, I thought it was very well organized and thorough,” one seminar member said. “Kate really made sure each of us was doing the exercises correctly.”
.
“I am looking forward to future sessions!”
.

.
We’re inspired — and pushed! — each and every day by the women coaches and athletes in our community. Strength comes in all forms, they’ve taught us — from mastery of heavy weights to virtuosity in movement.
.
But its most powerful expression might just be strength in community. And over the course of multiple sessions and weekends these last summer months, we’ve been honored to help bring women of all backgrounds together through a common commitment to health and fitness.
.
Thank you, Coach Kate, and thank you to all of the ladies who joined us. Looking forward to more to come!
