1. What do you do/like to do outside of the gym?
Depends on the season! I love just about anything from mountain biking, skiing, scuba diving, or playing a team sport. Anything that gets me outside enjoying the environment keeps me happy.
2. What inspired you to start coaching CrossFit?
Good question. I have been a CrossFit DC member since 2014 however, my experience with functional fitness dates back to 2008. Beyond hard work, the biggest factor contributing to success in the gym is good coaching. On a recent deployment, I had a CF LVL II Trainer help me achieve some fitness goals. After 60 days of training 5 days/week (CFDC programming of course!) and following a strict intermittent fasting diet I realized significant fitness goals and lost twenty pounds. I was so impressed by his personal dedication to helping me with my goals that I resolved to come back from my deployment, get my LVL I CF certificate and start helping others achieve their goals.
3. Best coaching cue/tip you’ve ever received?
I’m sure it had something to do with an oly lift…so probably the clean or snatch. When you’re trying to break through old PRs even the most subtle things can make a big difference. I remember I wasn’t taking full advantage of the second pull in my clean and after someone pointed this out, I made an adjustment and almost hit my chin on the bar on the way up!
4. Favorite movement, skill, or workout to coach and why?
Probably the clean or the snatch…both such dynamic movements! I also like coaching our athletes about their strategy for particularly challenging METCONs. Too often, we just go through the motions of a workout because it’s very daunting or challenging and forget to make a plan. It’s a great day when I can help someone figure out how to approach a workout and see the satisfaction they get from completing it better than expected. At the end of the day though…it’s really the athlete’s passion that makes coaching fun. Keep bringing the energy CFDC!
5. Favorite memory from coaching at CFDC?
Do I have to choose just one? I love seeing someone achieve a PR or their first of anything. It’s always such a great moment for the athlete and the coach. That’s what keeps you coming back!
