What do you do/like to do outside of the gym?
Travel! Lots of travel that may also include a side of scuba diving, skiing, city touring, or whatever else the road may throw at me. And I always try to make a point of dropping into a local affiliate!
What inspired you to start coaching CrossFit?
I’ve always loved mentoring and teaching in various capacities, but it was Dave Rice – the owner CrossFit Buffalo – that really motivated me to start coaching CrossFit back in 2008. I owe a lot to him. Everything I’ve been able to accomplish to date started back in his affiliate, and everything since has been hand-in-hand with numerous mentors. And I’ve never looked back!
Best coaching cue/tip you’ve ever received?
This is a tough one! I’d be lying if I provided any one “best” cue. I think it really comes down to the movement and what fault you are trying to fix. As we always say, the “best” cue is the one that works. Just be relentless and have a big toolkit of cues to draw from.
Favorite movement, skill, or workout to coach and why?
30 Muscle Ups for Time. This is probably my favorite workout in general, but I also love coaching it due to the complexities of finding effective and productive scales for athletes that go beyond the classic green band, pull-ups, and ring dips.
Favorite memory from coaching at CFDC?
Well, this one remains to be seen! Hopefully some good ones to come. I’m mostly just looking forward to joining the awesome community that Tom and CFDC have grown together. It is a privilege to be joining you all!
